Purpose
Prepares learners to become Occupational Health and Safety Practitioners who:
- Advise on safety and health matters in the workplace.
- Monitor and inspect work environments.
- Investigate incidents.
- Implement and maintain OHS systems.
Rationale
Responds to a critical industry need for standardised, comprehensive OHS training. Supports the South African Constitution’s right to a safe working environment. Enables career progression for those in technical fields. Replaces fragmented short-course training with a full qualification.
Entry Requirements
- Level 4 qualification with Mathematical Literacy.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available.
Modules and Credits
- Knowledge Modules: 76 credits (topics include fundamentals, OHS management, and supervision)
- Practical Skills Modules: 62 credits (inspections, documentation, risk profiling)
- Work Experience Modules: 118 credits (workplace exposure across various OHS functions)
Exit Level Outcomes
- Identify and manage workplace hazards and risks.
- Implement and improve OHS management systems.
- Monitor and enhance system effectiveness using audits and data.
Assessment
Formative: Conducted internally by providers.
Summative: External integrated assessment by QCTO’s designated partner.
International Comparability
Comparable in scope, content, and duration (15–18 months) to qualifications in:
- UK: NVQ Level 5 in OHS Practice (meets IOSH requirements)
- Australia: Certificate IV in OHS (suits OHS Officers under supervision)
Articulation
- Horizontal: National Diploma: Occupational Safety (Level 5)
- Vertical: No Level 6 qualification currently exists on OQSF.
